Day two - Waipio Valley & Hilo

Giant snail sill alive and kickin'. Jaren still loving it!
Our second day, we along with the DeGraws went to Waipio Valley and spent a little time in the Hilo area.  Lots of driving but oh so worth it.  It was breathtaking.  We came to the lookout and then decided to hike to the black sand beach below.  The road that leads there is for 4WD only and oh-so-steep so we decided that although we did have a 4WD rental car it probably wasn't the best idea to take it down.  Well, after about 5 minutes of our decent, Nathan thought it a better idea for him to take Tyce with him and drive the car down to the bottom and then we squish and all get a ride back up.  We are ever so glad he decided to do that because it would have been BRUTAL to make that climb.  It took us a lot of energy and time to make it down, I can only imagine how it would have been to climb out.
 Views along the way.

Our legs were quite unstable because it was so steep.

We made a wrong turn and happened upon this cool waterfall.
It was very muddy and puddly. Jaren thought that was the best.
Now we see another reason only 4WD is allowed on the road.

All the flip-flop wearers had legs that looked like this.

We made it to the beach. So worth it.  The kids had a ball and it was gorgeous!

After the beach we went to a fudge shop for ice cream.  Our Big Island Revealed book said we HAD to try the Tropical Dreams Ice Cream at this place.  Well, we did and it wasn't too awesome so we ate other flavors.
Then we made our way to Akaka Falls.  It was a great paved trail through the jungle where we got to see lots of cool shrubbery.

After a loooong day of driving and hiking, we were ready for dinner. Out of desperation we ended up at Ken's Pancake House.  The kids loved their dinners.  Mine was decent, and Nathan mostly regretted his choice.
