Kauai Day 3

Day three started out quite lovely.  Nathan and I took the boys on a bike ride to the beach before the girls dragged themselves out of bed.  Each morning on Poipu we could see seals playing in the water or turtles beached on the sand.  Pretty neat.

Some Hawaiian ruins at the entrance to the beach.
The rest of the day ended up being a long, torturous comedy of errors.  But this tunnel of trees really was magnificent to drive through.
We drove - A LOT. And that's about all our day entailed.  Everything we tried to do ended up being too dangerous, too windy, too rainy, too steep, too high of surf...so back into the car we'd go.  There was quite a lot of bonding going on in that car (or was that fighting) .
One of our failed attempts to check out a beach.  At the bottom of this steep, slipper trek was a drop off to a beach that we couldn't get ourselves to attempt with kids. Back in the van everyone!

We stopped for a picnic lunch at this filthy park on the outskirts of a ritzy resort town.  See those storm coulds?
Oh, and I forgot to pack any silverware, plates, or napkins.  We did our best to adapt.  Did you know fingers make great peanut butter spreaders :) and a paper bag can totally function as a plate.

One thing we did accomplish was a stop at Kilauea Lighthouse.  It also serves as a wildlife refuge...lost of birds.

And another thing that went right was a trip for shave ice at Hee Fat General Store.  It was pretty good but still doesn't top Big Island Shave Ice.  One of the boys spilled theirs of course and there was a very inpatient man who stopped by two times to tell Nathan he better clean it up.

Mallory with her root beer float shave ice.
Our way back to Poipu was quite long and grueling.  Traffic was insane and so, so slow.  I did take a moment to enjoy the scenery however.  Look at that beautiful, tropical landscape.
After such a cooped up day, we decided we better end it on a high note.  We played in the water and sand and rain until the sun set. Here's Jaren trying to catch little black fish in this pond formed at low tide.

After the beach, we took our dirty selves to Bubba Burger for some takeout and ate dinner in our condo.
